Sands had fun at the Cincinnati Observatory -  Fall 2009

We lucked out with a gorgeous warm, clear night. Over 100 people came from Sands to the Observatory in Mt. Lookout on November 7th to be a part of the International Year of Astronomy. We were treated to Jupiter and three of its moons, binary stars (two stars that orbit around a common center), the Andromeda Galaxy (2.5 million light years away and containing 1 trillion stars!) and other night sights. A highlight was watching the international space station soaring overhead right on time. Both telescopes (one from 1905 and the other from 1843 -- which makes it the oldest working telescope in the United States) were in use with many volunteers also setting up their telescopes on the grounds. Thank you to everyone who participated!
